Denden Girmay — Reflecting on the origin

    The Origin

I created the Joy Design Lab from going through hard things.

Not the kind of hard things that announce themselves loudly and earn immediate sympathy. The quiet, grinding kind — the kind that high-functioning people carry alone because they have always been the one who handles it. For me, that season was a high-conflict custody battle. It was the hardest thing I have ever navigated. And it was the thing that built everything you are reading right now.

What I learned — in the middle of it, not after — is that while we cannot control what happens to us, we always have the ability to decide how we will respond. How we live is our choice. Not a motivational poster version of that truth. The real, daily, sometimes inconvenient version of it.

That is the foundation of this work.

    The Trick Yourself Method

    The Framework

The Trick Yourself framework is something I have used for most of my life — long before I had a name for it. What I found, again and again, is that intentional micro-shifts are the most successful at creating lasting change.

They are not large enough to trigger your inner monologue. They do not run up against your resistance or your history or the voice that says this will never work for someone like me. They slip past your defenses and begin rearranging things quietly, from the inside.

"The right simple change, in the right place in your life, can make you feel magical."

That is not a metaphor. That is the method.

    The Observation

People around me would ask for advice, answers, solutions to the situations they found themselves in. They were living as though life just happened to them. As though the way they felt was fixed. As though there were no doors available — no pivots, no architecture, no design. Just endurance.

I could not stop seeing the gap between the life people were living and the life that was possible for them with one or two elegantly placed shifts. That gap became my work. Closing it — quietly, precisely, without burning anything down — became my mission.

    The Practice

    This is a we.

The Joy Design Lab was never meant to be a one-woman show. Denden leads the Architecture work — the diagnostic sessions, the framework, the retreat design, the Club. But what happens inside the retreats, inside the healing, inside the embodied practice — that is the work of a carefully assembled team.

Every practitioner in the Joy Design Lab circle was chosen for one reason: Denden trusts their work with her own interior life. Not just her clients'. That is the only standard that matters here.

    Sajata Stephane

Reiki Practitioner and Skin Care Specialist

Sajata has been part of the Joy Design Lab world since before it had a name. Her energy work and skin care practice sit at the intersection of nervous system regulation and physical restoration — which is exactly where our clients need to be met.

At Joy Design Lab retreats, Sajata holds the body-based work that transforms insight into embodied change. Her presence brings a layer of healing that goes deeper than conversation can reach — helping members arrive fully in their skin, sometimes for the first time in years.

    The Somatic & Breathwork Facilitator

The body holds what the mind cannot yet articulate. Our somatic facilitator works at exactly that intersection — using breath, movement, and sensation-based practice to release what years of high-functioning survival have stored in the nervous system.

This work is not fitness. It is not yoga. It is a precise, body-led process of locating tension, naming it, and creating the conditions for it to move. Members consistently describe it as the most surprising part of a retreat — and the most lasting.

Denden Girmay — The Joy Architect

Denden leads the Architecture Diagnostic sessions, the retreat framework, and the Joy Design Club. She is a nationally syndicated broadcaster, NLP practitioner, and the creator of the Joy Design Lab and the Trick Yourself Well method — frameworks she built from her own life and experiences.

She reaches over 1.3 million households across the U.S. through WDRBmedia.com, Nationally Syndicated Radio Broadcasting. She has spent more than a decade showing high-functioning people that the solution to their hardest problem is almost always simpler and closer than they think.

She is the architect. The team are the Structural Engineers, the Foundation Repair Specialists.

"When you join the Joy Design Club, you are not getting access to one person. You are entering a container held by a team of practitioners who have each done — and continue to do — their own interior work. That is what makes the room safe. That is what makes the change possible."
